Hi all, right not posted anything since the Bristol game so a quick update on things. Sorry not been following the A results so cant comment on them.

Ladies - A good win at home to an ever improving Cornwall ladies in March, but then the trip to Somerset in April did not go well with Devon coming 2nd best by 26-18. Yesterdays match at home to Dorset saw the ladies return to winning ways with an emphatic 31-13 result. With the top 2 teams in the region now qualifying for the main national finals at Yarmouth its all still to play for and the games away to Cornwall and then home to Somerset will decide who makes the long trip to Yarmouth next March.

Devon "B"

Ok so after our defeat at Bristol in the first game the home game against last years champs Cornwall in April was a must win. It was close all the way through but we eventually managed to scrape it 23-21. Then we travelled to Somerset in April, we got off to our usual dreadful start losing the first set 7-4 but we got our act together winning sets 2 & 3 6-5 to trail 17-16 going into the last set. I thought we were superb in the last set winning it 8-3, but Somerset will tell you they were terrible and threw it away. TBH who cares as a 24-20 win netted us the 3 points.

Now the Bristol team we played in Feb were by far the strongest B team I've seen in the region and our opinion was they would walk the division leaving us, Cornwall and Somerset to scrap it out for runners-up, but it seems since that first game they have had a few drop outs and Cornwalls 23-21 defeat of Bristol in April left the division wide open again.

So on to yesterdays game home to Dorset, with respect to Dorset this has always been considered a cert win and maybe we took things a little too easy. Started well winning 1st set 7-4 but lost 2nd 5-6, scraped the 3rd 6-5 to lead 18-15 but then lost 3 of first 4 frames to only lead 19-18, shared the next 4 to lead 21-20 and leave us needing 2 of the last 3 to get the all important win and 3 points. Shared the next 2 to at least guarentee a draw but we needed to win. I was on last, and having snookered myself on the black it looked an easy clearence for the Dorset player despite me hitting the black. Pressure can always tell so there was hope but once he left his last ball straight along the cusion with the black over the middle he was odds on favourite. But pressure told and he wobbled it to leave me an easy black for frame and match 23-21.

All credit to Dorset they are a far better team than in previous years but we really should have made it easier on ourselves.

Somerset travelled to Bristol and came away with a (shock?) 27-17 win, and Cornwall made the long trip to Portsmouth and beat IOW 31-13.

So after 4 games Cornwall, Somerset and ourselves have 9 points with Bristol on 6. Somerset host Cornwall next while we travel to play IOW. A win for us and a draw for Somerset/Cornwall would be ideal leaving us top on our own at the half way point of the season.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE NEXT GAME AWAY TO IOW HAS BEEN BROUGHT FORWARD A WEEK TO SUNDAY 5th JUNE DUE TO THE IOW FESTIVAL.

Heard a rumour this morning, maybe someone can confirm. Also what are peoples thoughts on it.

Apparently EPA have scrapped the point a frame plus 5 bonus for a win in Inter-county and gone for 3 points for a win and 1 for for a draw, frames difference to only count in event of a tie.

As I said only a rumour but to me seems a really bad idea.

Thoughts anyone?????????????

Region 6 results - Sunday 13th February

Bristol v Devon

A 21-23 (Devon I believe won the last 7 frames)

B 27-17

L 11-33

Somerset v IOW

A 26-18 ?

B 31-13 (Somerset won last 13 frames)

L 37-7

Cornwal v Dorset

A 31-13

B 31-13

L 31-13

Great result for Devon A, especially after trailing 21-16

Also a good start for Devon Ladies, although with Bristol struggling to even fulfill the match at the start the ladies may be a little dissapointed with a 33-11 win, early days though.

Devon B

Once again we got off to an awful start losing the first 5 frames, recovered in the second half of the session and were quite pleased to only lose it 7-4, so hoping to get into the game in the second session. No - lost it 8-3 and the third went Bristols way to 7-4. So 22-11 down starting the fourth, easy win all 11 for a draw LOL, didnt happen but we did show a little fight and eventually won the session 6-5 to at least on paper look slightly respectable.

We really need to start better, last couple of seasons we have been woeful in the opening session so often, it gives the opposition confidence and puts us under pressure immiediately.

Having said that you cant knock Bristols performance, they look a far better side than last year, they were clinical with their finishing and gave us a lesson in how to kill off frames quickly often in one visit!!!!!!!!!

Couple of excellent performances for Devon, Dave Eden and Craig Hill both winning 4 from 4, sadly the other 9 of us could only manage 9 frames between us.

Next game is home to Cornwall, last seasons region winners, this is a game we cannot afford to lose as we then visit Somerset, two bad results and our season will be over before the end of April. We cannot and must not let this happen guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i,m absolutely gutted that i couldn,t enter devon trials as i am one of the players who would have took this seriously, damn shame that not that many entered the trials, if i wasn't so ill i would have been there myself now i'll have to bloody wait till next year, mind you at least i can prepare myself for next year and i am not missing it even if i am ill,i will qualify because i am now dead serious about it and welldone for all those who did qualify, good luck in the future, mens and ladies i'll be there next year definately i'v got two new decent cues to try out now whoop whoop!!

Devon Mens Trials - Saturday 11th Dec 2010

To be honest, a rather dissappointing turnout with less than 40 entries (including the retrialists), we have in the past had 60+ but i think the increase in entry cost in recent years has deterred the shall we say less than serious players who only turned up for a few games without any real ambitions of making the squad.

Thanks to Dave and Jackie Eden for another smoothly run trial and thankfully an early finish.

Congratulations to the following players who will join the top 16 from last season to make up the mens squad for 2011.

Retrialists - Hadleigh Winsor, Craig Hill and yours truely plus Matt Miller, Matt Whitley, Greg Batten and Ian McKay

So Cornwall v Dorset was played this Sunday

A 29-15

B29-15

L Didn't play

Right, this means for the B team, we will be champions if we beat Cornwall 26-18 and Wiltshire take 5 or more frames off Bristol. More than possible if we are on our game. (The points will need to be officially comfirmed as its only my running totals I'm working from)

Devon

Good win for the A, but now 25 points behind Somerset who look certain to win the title.

Another win for the ladies, and with Somerset not playing yesterday Devons lead is up to 55 points and barring a disaster againt Cornwall last game Devon Ladies are off th Yarmouth.

Devon B

We went into the game knowing we needed a big win to give ourselves a chance of winning the title, things started soooooo well winning the first 2 sesions 8-3 to lead 16-6 at halfway, but after winning the first frame of the 3rd session it all went pear shaped as we lost 7 frames on the trott and ended up losing it 8-3 so 19-14 going into the final 11 frames and we really needed them all. We came close with a 9-2 session win for a final result of 28-16 which I fear may not be enough. We are now 13 points in front of Bristol and 22 clear of Cornwall but they still have a game in hand against Dorset which is due to be played on 24th October. We need Dorset to produce a couple of sessions like they did in the 3rd against us. "If", and its a big if, Dorset could take 16 frames off Cornwall we would go into the last game 11 behind cornwall and beating them 26-18 would be enough assuming Bristol didnt get 39 frames off Wiltshire in their final game.

Cannot believe that craig hill has been banned by devon for LIFE!!! Well out of order considering he didnt start the fight and got started on by the other player from tiverton's interleague team, the interleague team from tiverton are recknowned for starting trouble and fights but yet the other player (i have been told) got a paltry 5 year ban and craig gets life, this is completly out of order and anyone that knows craig knows he is a very in offensive person. We as a devon team and also the torbay interleague team all need to get behing craig and support him i agree he should be banned but life come on!!!

Dissappointing result for the A team, nexts months game at Somerset is now a must win.

Maybe not as many frames as the Ladies would have liked but again next month is the crunch game and will probably be a title decider.

B team started slowly losing first session 5-6, but from then on we just got better and better winning the second 6-5, third 7-4 and a superb 8-3 in the final session for a 26-18 win. I'm sure the Bristol players will argue but with a fair share of the run we could easily have got 30+ and it would not have been an unfair result. All in all a fantastic result which we need to at least repeat next month against Somerset.
